Are You Washing Your Hair Correctly?

Cocovit Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Keeping your hair healthy is work, and if you’re like us you tend to resort to more hair trims than necessary to maintain a well groomed look. We took some time to chat with stylists, conduct research and gather tips from other cultures to determine the right steps in promoting healthier hair. You’ll be amazed at how easy this routine is and unfortunately how many things you’re probably doing wrong.

So, stop wasting that water and replace some of your regular old bath towels, because it’s time to introduce yourself to an entirely new hair washing regime. Trust us, your soon to be luscious locks will thank you.

1. STOP WASHING IT
We know, this sounds a bit absurd, but you’re probably washing your hair more often than you need to. Every time you wash your hair you actually strip out the natural oils, leaving it dry and damaged. We recommend washing it between 2-3 times a week, at the most. In between washes use a dry shampoo and tie it up in a top knot (we adore them) to keep it clean. And if you feel you absolutely need to wash it everyday, try to just rinse instead of shampooing.

2. COMB IT OUT
Most of us probably have this step completely wrong, we surely did. Comb your hair with a wide tooth comb in the shower while you have conditioner in to help detangle your knots. This will protect your hair from breakage, which it’s highly prone to when it’s wet and freshly washed. After you’re out of the shower, no need to comb it through again, the knots will already be out. Style as usual.

3. COOL IT DOWN
After washing out your conditioner, rinse your hair with cold water. We totally understand how this could be a bit difficult, especially the winter months, but this helps seal the hair follicles (help preventing split-ends & breakage), leaves it shiny (something we're all struggle with in the winter), frizz-free and even protects hair color (hot water often causes brassiness). Convinced yet?

4. WRAP IT UP — OUR WAY
Like us, you're probably used to wrapping your hair in your bath towel, well you should actually be using a microfiber towel instead. A microfiber towel helps reduces frizz, protects against breakage and speeds up the drying time since the towel actually absorbs water faster. (Our personal favorite: Aquis Microfiber Hair Towels.)

5. PUT A MASK ON, WEEKLY
We're slightly obsessed with hair masks. In the past we have always rotated between various store bought deep conditioners, unfortunately applying these products only hide the problems rather than fixing them. Due to the countless ingredients and chemicals your hair is most likely still damaged and in need of protein, and you wouldn’t even know it. Cocovit Coconut Oil provides long-term benefits and it is safe for any hair type, making it the ideal hair mask.

Cocovit Coconut Oil...
Penetrates, Thickens and Protects: The oil is completely absorbed by the hair, filling up the hollow shafts, adding body and making hair thicker, while also protecting it from damage.

Prevents Protein Loss and Boosts Shine: The oil helps hair retain proteins – normally lost through weak, damaged hair. It also seals in moisture, making hair stronger and silkier.

Prevents Dandruff and Hair Fall-Out: The oil’s antibacterial properties protect the scalp against infections resulting in itching, dandruff and weak dry hair. They also protect hair follicles, strengthening hair – meaning less breakage and less hair falling out!

Promotes Hair and Scalp Health: Vitamins E and K found in the oil nourish hair and boost health and shine. Massaging it into the scalp makes it easier for hair follicles to absorb nutrients, while stimulating blood circulation to the area, moisturizing and preventing build-up of dry skin (another cause of dandruff).
